Changing the root password for a Virtual Private Server (VPS)

Updating via SSH/Command Line

To change the root password on your VPS you will need to use the command line using SSH. Please follow these steps:
  1. Log in to SSH on your VPS.
  2. Once connected issue the following command:
    passwd root
  3. This will bring up a new line where you enter your new password, press enter.
  4. Now re-enter the same password, press enter.
This will have now successfully changed your root password. Please ensure you set it to something complex, an alpha-numeric combination, which is not based upon dictionary words.

Forgotten your root password?

If you have forgotten your root password, and are no longer able to access your VPS, you can contact our technical support team via a Support Request and we can reset this for you.

Important Information

Please note it is only possible to change the root password on a Self Managed VPS, you won't have access to the root password for a Fully Managed VPS.
