Differences between Self-Managed and Fully-Managed VPS

This article will go over the key features and traits between our Self Managed VPS and Fully Managed VPS product range, providing some information on what you can expect from each.

Self Managed VPS

A Self Managed VPS is a VPS that is managed by you or your Systems Administrator (IT person). Support is not included with this service, meaning that any maintenance, updates, or troubleshooting needs to be conducted by you. This product is ideal for those who have the technical knowledge to manage their own server or have an IT team that can do so on their behalf. Features include:
  • Your choice of OS can be installed from the range of images we have available
  • Can apply a range of addons/licensing on demand as needed.
  • You are provided full root access to the VPS, allowing you to provision any custom applications or changes you desire to the server

Things to Consider

What we manage:
  • The network that your VPS uses
  • The physical server that your VPS is on
What you manage:
  • Server Monitoring
  • Operating System updates and patches
  • Security hardening and software configuration
  • Software installation and configuration
  • Backups

Server Management Jobs

If you have an AlmaLinux/CentOS-based cPanel server, we can provide support in the form of a Server Management Job. These come at a cost of $29.95 per issue. You can find out more about what is covered in a Server Management Job here.

Fully Managed VPS

A Fully Managed VPS is a VPS that is managed by our team, this is configured with our custom software configuration and monitoring tools, which is configured the same as our Shared Hosting Environment. As such, support and management are included with this service, meaning that any maintenance, updates, or troubleshooting is conducted by our team. This product is ideal for those who do not have the technical knowledge or time to manage their own server but still need the power and flexibility of a VPS. An overview of what you can expect from our Fully Managed VPS includes:
  • AlmaLinux + cPanel/WHM ONLY, Comes with a strict set of addons/licenses as a requirement.
  • No custom software or configuration changes to VPS can be made outside of our scope of support.
  • You are provided Reseller access to WHM on the VPS, allowing management of your customers and to certain administrator features.
  • 24/7 Australian Phone and support request help from our team of local experts.
  • Monitoring of the server health is done by our team.
Note: If you have an existing Self Managed VPS with us and wish to upgrade to a Fully Managed VPS, this is possible but will require purchasing a Fully Managed VPS and a Migration. You can read more about this process here:

Can't Decide?

These products cover different markets, and if you are certain you need a VPS but can't decide which it would be best to contact our sales team via Live Chat or support request to discuss which may be the best solution. Depending on your situation, this may vary, but essentially it breaks down to:
  • If you have the knowledge and time to be monitoring and managing your own server or need full access and freedom to customise the server for your use - Self-Managed is for you.
  • If you have grown past shared hosting and need your own cPanel server but don't have the knowledge or time to monitor and manage it - Fully-Managed would be for you.
