How may I password protect web directories/folders?

Category: Security

It is possible to add password protection to your web directories/folders, making it easy to lock things down whilst in development or when keeping pages away from the general public. Using password protection will set a username and password prompt for accessing a particular directory in web browsers. It sets up a htpasswd configuration.

  1. Login to cPanel.
  2. Click the Directory Privacy icon.
  3. Select the folder you wish to protect.
  4. Check the “” tickbox.
  5. Enter a name for the word protected directory.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Now click “? Go Back”
  8. Under “Create User:” enter the username and password combination you wish to set.
  9. Click Add/Modify authorized user.

The password protection is now in place. You can disable password protection by repeating steps, 1, 2, 3 & 4.
